All Black Youth in El Paso County Colorado perform at grade level or above in school.
All children are welcome, but Black Youth will lead the change needed to help all youth achieve their full potential.
Reading proficiency is foundational to academic and career success
Only 16% of Black 4th grade students scored proficient in reading on the 2022 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) compared to 41% for White students (Data)
Locally, only 15.7% of Black 3rd grade students in School District 11 met or exceeded expectations on the Colorado Reading test, CMAS ELA, compared to 39.5% for White students.
In Colorado statewide, only 22.9% of Black 3rd grade students met expectations compared to 50% for White students.
This educational inequity is not acceptable
This is a longstanding crisis with no clear solution demonstrated by the education system
Waiting for the system to address this need is not working
More of the same is not working
Schools cannot focus on one group of students over another, so schools cannot directly address the need that is clearly facing Black Youth
Our only choice is to build a Movement to support families and students and provide them with the training needed to close the Skill Gap
Black youth face a significant inequity in NAEP test scores
Black students are 13 times more likely to be suspended from school than White students for the same offense
Black Americans are 5 times more likely to be incarcerated than White Americans for similar offenses
Home ownership rate for Black Americans is 44% compared to 73% for White Americans
White families on average have a six to one wealth advantage over Black families
